's contest.~ Intro to Oil Spill~
How many times have you felt bad about something? Earth Day comes once a year and over the course of 24 hours, people try and attempt to re-shape themselves: Using less water, driving less.. But how long does this last?
The BP Gulf of Mexico Oil spill is releasing up to 4,200,000 gallons of crude ol into our beautiful oceans. Most people will look on in horror, and for most this is all they do. Most people think that the change the make will be so insignificant that they decide not try to change at all. BUT even doing small things; like trying to ride a bike more often will decrease the amount of oil in our environment.
Time and time again we have seen countless oil spills; we've seen constant reminders that we are destroying our very Earth: Land falling beneath the ocean- reminders that our water is shorting out and will continue to do so unless we try and save it- Small things that go ignored because people always think; "So what? ONE DAY people will do something about it."- But don't wait; Act NOW. Because everything you do WILL make a difference. It's a snowball effect- YOU do what you can and inspire others to do what they can as well. ~ Concept ~
Alright guys- so I've really wanted to do something on the oil spill for a while; even though I"m not talented enough to be able to portray a more in-depth concept, I thought that going with something meaningful and straight forward might be for the best. Even the smallest symbols in this picture stand for something.
1- The character- The character's Meersa from my story AHT. In the story she's the guardian of souls- which here plays an emphasis on the many animals that have been lost because of the oil spill. Countless fish and birds are losing their lives- and for the reason that us humans were too careless.
2- The oil; This is my first time really drawing water and so I attempted to make the water look like crude oil- even if it is inaccurate; I hope you can understand the concept.
3- The Fact that she's FLOATING and not sinking- The title implies that she's sinking but that is only because soon (Metaphorically speaking) we WILL be sinking. The water is our source of life, and now our water is becoming more and more polluted. Remember that the smallest things you do to save water can make a difference. The smallest things you do to refrain from using oil make a huge difference as well. Anyways, her floating
over it is supposed to imply not only that people are dependant on water but that the land floats above it as well. Humans live on top of water, if you really think about it. Eventually, if we continue polluting our world- the water will continue to swallow up more and more land.
4- The vines: I worked with the concept, "Earth Fights back!" before for a personal project and I decided to bring the concept into this picture as well. First of all, notice how the weather patterns have been changing? How our rain is more acidic, etc? This is the Earth's response to our so called man-made necessities. In the end, even if it 'convenient', oil is only killing our earth.
REMEMBER, BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.Or something like that ;;
-I'll probably come back and edit this description later- I think I need to focus more on the actual oil spill;;;
